Lottie grew up on the family farm near Mayville with her brothers and sisters and attended the rural school and was a member of the Gran Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. A very pretty and petite young lady, Aletta was an accomplished seamstress, and she designed and sewed clothing for women in the Mayville area before her marriage. She sewed her own wedding gown, tacking on fresh flowers that day for her marriage to Nels Tovson on Jun 25, 1899. They took a homestead near Richwood, Minnesota and eventually became the parents of five children.
