Martha Peterson was born to parents Andrew Peterson and Anne Dorthea (Larsen) Peterson on March 6, 1874 in Mayville, Traill County, North Dakota. She was the fourth oldest child of Andrew and Anne Peterson's 13 children. Both Andrew Peterson and Anne Dorthea (Larsen) Peterson were born in Norway and immigrated to America where they met and married in Wisconsin and later moved to Mayville, North Dakota.

On March 10, 1893 Martha married Bendik Sather in Moscow, Idaho. Martha's older sister Clara married John Hove in 1888 in Mayville, North Dakota. Martha and her sister Clara, (Mrs. John Hove) were pioneers of the Genesee community.

Ben and Martha started farming in 1893, considered the most trying of all years for farmers, when the harvest season became so wet that many were unable to gather the growing crops. Together they raised their six children on the family farm. Their first daughter, Mabel was born in 1895 and married Elmer Hovland. Their son Allen was born in 1899 and married Alice Wegner. Daughter Emma was born in 1903 and married Lowell Harmon and then David Allen. Son Norris was born in 1905 and married Nell Wilson. Daughter Olive was born in 1910 and married Carl Shirley. Their last child Bernice was born in 1915 and married George Sparling. In 1926 they retired from farming and moved to Genesee for a year, and then to Moscow where they resided for many years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1943.

Martha (Peterson) Sather died July 19, 1949 in Moscow, Idaho, at the age of 75, and is buried in the Genesee Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery. Her husband Ben Sather is buried next to her and they share the same headstone.
