Shirley E. (Chase) Pagel, our loving wife, mother and grandmother, age 72, of 1310 S. 11th St., Manitowoc, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 28, 2010, at her home following a courageous 12-year battle with multiple myeloma with her family by her side.
Shirley was born in Door County on Sept. 30, 1937, daughter of the late Louis and Artyice (Starr) LaViolette. She was a 1955 graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School. On Feb. 4, 1956, Shirley was married to Ray Chase. He preceded her in death in May of 1986. On June 25, 1988, she was married to Fred Grapentine. He preceded her in death in 2000. On October 5, 2002, she was married to Alvin "Jack" Pagel. Shirley worked for the Mirro Aluminum Company from 1955 until her retirement in 2000.
Shirley loved the outdoors, especially her flowers and birds. Some of her best times were spent on Steven's Lake fishing or deer hunting at the cabin in Newald, Wis.
Survivors include her husband Alvin Pagel, Manitowoc; children: Duane "Yogi" (Bonnie) Chase, Newald, Ray (Sara) Chase, Two Rivers, Karen (Chris) Schock, Two Rivers, Eileen (Barry) Miller, Two Rivers; stepchildren: John E. (Cheryl) Pagel, Ohio, Lori (Jay) Wince, Ohio; grandchildren: Shane (Heather) Chase, Ray P. Chase, Sandra Lambert, Emily and Kyle Novack; Kimberly (Brandon) Maertz; Zachery Miller; Raessa and Elise Miller; Angela (Chad) Sheets; Kaitlyn Bashore; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers: Mildred Monfils;, Vivian (Wayne) Johnson, Virginia Meunier, Donna Nicholson, Doris (Daryle) Wolske, Fay (Willard) Kolstad, Kieth (Sophie) LaViolette, Roy (Mary) LaViolette, Louie (Susie) LaViolette; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Carol Meunier, Ray Mattie, Bub "Ed" (Shirleen) Chase, Kathy (Steve) Groth, Marlene Chase, Gerald Pagel, Gene (Janice) Pagel, Donna Parker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first two husbands; one sister: Phyllis (Phillip) Nelson; one brother and sister-in-law: Kenny (Jane) LaViolette; five brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law: Charlie Meunier, Lawrence Monfils, Tom Nicholson, Richard Chase, Bob (Pat) Venard, Joyce Mattie.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1033 S. 8th St., Manitowoc. Rev. Dave Rosenow will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home and Crematory of Manitowoc is assisting the Pagel family.
A special thank you to doctor Yetter and his wonderful nurses, Aurora VNA, Pam and Dawn for the wonderful care shown to Shirley. Her children would also like to thank Jack for loving their mother and caring for her as much as he did. Shirley was a beautiful person on the outside and the inside. She loved unconditionally and had a smile that would light up the room. She will be sadly missed by all.
