Family stories say that his family wanted him to be a priest, but he did not feel the same. His father was with General Custer's Army and the other family members lived in Larimore, North Dakota where his father died when he was young. His mother died in Great Falls, Montana.
James married Lorraine Myrtle Monroe and they had 4 children; Harold, James, Francis and Carl, all lived in St. Paul, Minnesota.
