Michael Joseph Cowley was born January 6, 1882 in Fort Abraham Lincoln, Burleigh County, North Dakota to Stephen Cowley and Bridget Monroe-Cowley.
His father was serving with General Custer and the family lived at Fort Abraham Lincoln and then in Larimore, North Dakota. His siblings were, James, Stephen, Ambrose who died as an infant and Sadie.
He married Josephine Maher. Michael was a business man and they lived in Devils Lake, North Dakota for a time and then in San Mateo, California where he died.
Michael and Josephine had three children; Howard in 1913, Josephine in 1915 who died as a teen in Devils Lake, North Dakota and John in 1922. Both of his sons served in the military during WWII.
