Lorraine Myrtle Monroe was born June 12, 1881 at Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio to James M. Monroe and Samantha Loretta Buchanan Monroe. Her father had health challenges and died in 1893 her mother could not care for the family. She then lived in an orphanage in Ross county, Ohio with her younger siblings there as well.
She married James Joseph Cowley in about 1903 in Minnesota and was the mother of Harold S. Cowley, James Loren Cowley, Francis B. Cowley, and Carl Andrew Cowley. She was survived by three of her children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Interment was in Forest Lawn cemetery beside her husband.
