Velma Ruth Ferrell Yates was born 22 May 1910 to George Albert Ferrell and Cora Alice Tosh Ferrell on a farm east of the Lazy E and west of the Holly Chappell farm near Guthrie, Logan, OK. She was the youngest of 4 children and her family called her "Baby Ruth". Ruth rode a horse to Lear School as a child. She took organ and piano lessons from Mrs. Rhinehart and Mrs. Karner. She married James Harley Yates on 16 Nov 1929 in Guthrie, OK and they enjoyed 40 wonderful years together. Ruth and Harley had 2 children, Velma Jean and James, and 4 grandchildren. Harley and Ruth managed a store for Holly Chappell and then moved on to the Irvin School area. Ruth kept busy being a mom and homemaker but helped her community by serving 23 years as election inspector of her precinct. She and a good friend fed the Guthrie Lion's Club their monthly noon meal for many years. Ruth was a member of the West Guthrie Methodist Church for over 50 years. Three friends were asked to describe Ruth and they replied: She is friendly, loyal, loves people, good friend, fine lady, best friend I ever had!!!! She died 3 Nov 1997 in Guthrie, OK and is buried in Summit View Cemetery.
