Velma Jean (Yates) Scannell, 80, of Guthrie OK, the daughter of James Harley and Velma Ruth (Ferrell) Yates was born October 4, 1930, on a farm across the road from the Lazy E, and she passed away on April 21, 2011, in Guthrie. Velma Jean graduated the 8th grade from the Meridian School and graduated from the Guthrie High School in 1948. Velma Jean married John W. Scannell on March 13, 1948. They had two children. The family lived on a farm east of Guthrie, and they were members of the West Guthrie Methodist Church for many years. Velma Jean was active in the Prairie Grove Home Demonstration Club, served as 4-H Club parent sponsor, raised a big garden every summer, and retired in 1993 after 27 years as a cook with the Guthrie School District. She and her husband were members of the Grace Covenant Church family.

Velma Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Scannell.

She is mourned by her daughter, son, brother, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many friends and family members.

Velma Jean's sense of humor and distinctive laugh will be missed by many.
