Mary Lois Platner, 91, of St. Germain, WI ,passed peacefully on July 12, 2023, in hospice care at Legacy of the North Woods Assisted Living surrounded by loved ones.

Mary graduated from Manitowoc High School in 1950, where she was class valedictorian. She attended University of Wisconsin- Madison where she earned a BS in Medical Technology.

She met her future husband, John L. Platner (Jack), who was pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering, at a flag football game on campus. They married following their graduations on June 19, 1954.

In addition to raising her family of six and working as a Medical Technician, Mary completed an MA in Health Administration from Central Michigan University in 1977. She was promoted to Manager of clinical laboratory at Elm Brook Memorial Hospital in Brookfield, WI where she worked from 1977 until her retirement in 1995.

Throughout her life, Mary was passionate about improving the communities she lived in. While her many civic activities are too numerous to list, some highlights include:

• 2010-2018: Olson Library Foundation Cabinet Vice Co-Chairs with husband Jack & Vilas County of Northern Waters Library Service Board of Trustees

• 1998-2004: Advisory Member of Vilas County Lake Classification; 1995-97 President of the Wisconsin Association of Lakes; 1999-02 President of the Vilas County Association of Lakes, Alma-Moon Lake District Chairman & Commissioner; 1998- 04; Wisconsin Clean Water Achievement Award 2002.

• 1976-1978.: Appointed by the Governor on the State of Wisconsin Dwelling Code Council, which prepared the first uniform building code for construction of one- and two-family homes and manufacturers -housing in Wisconsin.

Mary was a powerhouse of a woman, yet kind, supportive, nurturing, funny and a lover of life who almost always had a smile on her face. She traveled the world with her husband Jack and loved living in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. She and her husband, Jack, shared a joy for flying. Prior to Mary's retirement, Jack & Mary's Cessna Cardinal airplane was their main means of transportation to spend as much time as possible in the North Woods. While she was Manager of the clinical laboratory in Elm Brook, Mary got up before dawn to get the training required to earn her private pilot's license as well as her instrument rating, which she described as "one of the hardest things she ever did in her life". Over a ten-year period, Mary & Jack found their dream retirement property, built a unique, octagon house, on a peninsula overlooking Moon Lake as well as a hanger on the property. From their lake property, Jack & Mary built & flew a Challenger Ultralight floatplane as well an Searey amphibian airplane. Mary taught her children so much about life, the importance of family, the value of friendships.

Mary was the devoted mother of Teresa Platner-Sherman (John), Karen Farley (John), Sue Platner (Joe Shemky), Tom Platner (Janet), Jean Holz (Ty), and Patti Fredman (Tim); proud grandmother of Danielle Sherman, Bryan Farley, Adam Farley, Jenna Mersch (Shemky), Sarah Sandager (Platner), Laura Malahy (Platner), David Platner, Megan Platner, Jack Holz, Jadyn Holz, Alexina Gosh (Fredman), Ben Fredman, Sam Fredman, Jorin Mattox (Fredman); great grandmother to Max, Cecily & Gemma Gosh, Cloe & Milo Sandager, Rory, Jack & Lucas Malahy, and Michael & Mason Mersch.

Heartfelt gratitude to Skip Armstrong, Terri's partner, who kept the Moon Lake property and buildings well maintained and Mary laughing and on her toes.

You will always be a part of our lives, and we miss you. Rest now in heavenly peace. We love you.

Memorials donations can be made to Legacy of the North Woods Assisted Living, 910 Winter Street, Eagle River WI 54521 earmarked for the new Sensory Garden.
