Former Alderman Dies In Leap From Bridge Sunday
Frank Nickisch, 56, former alderman of the Seventh ward, committed suicide Sunday afternoon by jumping from a concrete abuttment under the fourteenth street bridge into the Sheboygan river.
Coroner C. N. Sonnenburg stated that Mr. Nickisch must have landed head first in a shallow place, because his neck was broken. There was no water in his lungs, he said.
Mrs. John Planninsheck, whose husband operates a saloon at the south end of the bridge, said she was talking to Mr. Nickisch a few minutes before he jumped in the river. He had complained to her of being sick, she said, and indicated that he would take his life. She declared that she watched him and that he crawled through the railing on the north end of the bridge and went under it.
She notified her husband and her son, Victor, and the latter found Mr. Nickisch floating in the river. He attempted to pull the body ashore, but failed. Mrs. Planninsheck then called the police.
Members of his family cannot understand what caused him to take his life, as he had been considerate of the welfare of others, and seemed to be in good spirits when he left home.
Mr. Nickisch was born in Germany on April 1, 1874, and came to America directly to Sheboygan when he was six years old, residing here ever since. Mr. Nickisch attended a parochial school here, from which he was graduated. Later he took a position with the city at the pump house, which he held for ten years. For twenty-three years after that he was engaged as an engineer at the Konrad Schreier company. He served as alderman of the Seventh ward two terms. Up to the time of his death, he was employed by the city.
The deceased was a member of St, Paul's Lutheran church, the Arbelter and Kranken Vereins, the Brewers' union and the Stationary Engineers. He had many friends in the city and county, who will join with relatives in mourning his death.
Besides his wife, Mr. Nickisch is survived by bis daughter, Mrs. Otto Koepke, one son, Gustave, one sister, Mrs. Herman Zutz, and three brothers, Charles and Otto of Sheboygan, and August of Milwaukee. Three children also survive.
The body was taken to the Robert H. Kroos Funeral Home, where funeral services will be conducted. The time of the funeral will be announced Tuesday.
