Luther Rogers was the oldest of six children born to Caleb and Elizabeth Ordway Rogers in Newbury, Massachusetts. The family moved to Sanbornton, New Hampshire when he was a young child. Some time after his mother's death, the father and children moved back to West Newbury.

In his early 20s he enrolled in the Medical School of Maine. He then transferred to Dartmouth College, where he was awarded his MD degree in 1827. He practiced medicine in Massachusetts (1827-1833), Portland, Maine (1833-1836), and Harrison, Maine (1836-1842).

In 1834 he married Hannah Bailey of Newbury. Sarah Louise and Luther Bailey Rogers were born in Harrison. Luther and Hannah were active in the Congregational Church at Harrison, where the Rogers name was carved on the pew that Luther Rogers rented.

About 1842 the family moved north to Patten, Maine, where Dr. Rogers practiced medicine for 35 years and where Edwin Searle Rogers and Lucasta Jane Rogers were born. Dr. Rogers helped establish Patten's Congregational Church and was appointed a founding member of the Trustees of the Patten Academy. Son Edwin died in the Civil War and Luther's wife, Hannah died in 1875. He spent his final two years as a widower.
