DAVID KRAMER
(1923 - 1928)

NEWTON BOY KILLED ON WAY HOME FROM SCHOOL
NEWTON LAD RUNS IN PATH OF ONCOMING CAR
David Kraemer, 5, Victim of Accident Thursday When
Struck by Car Driven by A. Hooper
Run down on Highway 141, a few rods south of Newton village, 10
miles south of this city, Thursday afternoon, as he was returning
home from school with his brother, David Kraemer, five year old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kraemer, was almost instantly killed
by a car driven by A.J. Hooper, of this city, a salesman for a
local concern. The latter resides at 2201 Washington street. The
two brothers, David, 5, and (private), had been attending school
at the White Trail school a short distance north of the point where
the accident happened and had been dismissed from the afternoon
session of school with the rest of the scholars by the teacher,
Miss Kitzerow. The two brothers were walking along the side of the
cement, and had reached a point opposite the Calvin Wernecke farm
when Hooper came along in a coupe. He said that he noticed the two
boys, who as he came up an incline in the road and sounded his horn,
were off on one side of the cement. He saw that they were being
motioned by another boy to come into a yard across the highway to
an orchard and suddenly David, the younger of the brothers, darted
forward without warning into the path of the car. Hooper stopped
his car as soon as possible and carried the injured lad to the side
of the road, while others summoned Dr. Barnstein from Newton. But
the young Kraemer boy was beyond relief having suffered a fractured
skull and other injuries.
No Inquest To Be Held.
The body was removed to the Vogelsang undertaking parlors in this
city, and Coroner Kemper and Sheriff Beduhn notified, who visited
the scene of the accident. After taking the testimony of the eye
witnesses to the accident the authorities decided that it was an
unavoidable accident and so no inquest was called. Hooper stated
that the Kraemer boy started his dash from the east to the west
side of the highway, evidently unaware of the approach of the car
and ran directly into the path of the machine so close that he was
unable to swerve the wheel sufficiently to miss striking the boy.
Family of Seven Children.
The dead lad was one of a family of seven children ranging in age
from one year to 17 years. The family home is located three quarters
of a mile east of Highway 141, ten miles south of the city. Besides
the parents, four brothers, (private) and two sisters, (private)
survive. Burial will take place on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock
from the family home with interment at the Reformed church cemetery
in Centerville.
