Boxer Rebellion Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Hayward, California, he served as a Private, in the Legation Guards U.S. Marine Corps, on board the USS Newark. At the siege by the Boxers at Peking, China during the dates of June 28 to August 17, 1900, Private Silva remained on duty at his post repelling the enemy in spite of being seriously wounded. For meritorious conduct, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in December, 1901 and was the first Hispanic Marine of Mexican-American heritage to receive the Medal of Honor.
