Mrs. Elmer "Bernice" Leonhard, 89, of Sheboygan passed away at her home accompanied by her devoted daughter on Thursday morning, June 14, 2012.

Bernice was born on August 3, 1922 in Hollandtown, a daughter to the late Theodore and Petronella (VanVreede) Gerrits. She graduated from Chilton High School in 1941. On August 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to Elmer Leonhard at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Chilton. Elmer preceded her in death on May 8, 1987. Bernice had been employed at Wigwam Mills and St. Nicholas Hospital. Bernice always enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, taking car rides and traveling with her daughter to Door County. Her many interests included crocheting, cooking and baking.

Bernice was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, the Women's Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Women's Charity Club and the St. Anne's Christian Women. She had served on the Citizen Advisory Committee under Mayor Schneider.

Bernice is survived by her daughter, Georgene Leonhard of Sheboygan; a daughter-in-law, Carol Leonhard, of Kiel; a son, Richard (Mary) Leonhard of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren, Richard (Julie) Leonhard, Jodi (Scott) Miller, Todd (Christi) Leonhard, Ryan Leonhard, Aristotle Leonhard and Alezandria Leonhard, all of Sheboygan, Michael (Sandra) Leonhard of West Bend, Robb (Tiffany) Leonhard of Plymouth and Tanya (Robert) Wiesner of Cedar Grove; 14 great-grandchildren, Emma, Estelle, and a new great-granddaughter, Hunter and Logan Leonhard, Jordon and Justin Miller, Joshua and Lindsey Leonhard, Maxwell, Benjamin and Zachary Leonhard, Thomas and Oscar Wiesner; a sister, Evelyn Keller of Appleton; a brother, Donald (Edith) Gerrits of Fond du Lac; sisters-in-law, Marcella Thieleke and Margaret Miennert both of Sheboygan and Helen Ziarnik of Manitowoc and a brother-in-law, Arvin (Renate) Leonhard of Georgia. She is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a son, Gerald "Jerry" Leonhard, a great grandson, Michael Tyler Leonhard, sisters, Ethel Dupler, Hilda Veit and Betty Slater and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 3 p.m., Monday, June 18, 2012 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church with Rev. Daniel Lasecki as celebrant. Family and friends may gather at the church, N. 8th and Huron Ave. on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of Mass at 3 p.m. Inurnment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
