On that date, it was returning from Puerto Rico when it ran aground and sank in a heavy fog near Block Island, Rhode Island. His Medal of Honor citation reads, "Serving on board the U.S.S. Leyden, for heroism at the time of the wreck of that vessel, 21 January 1903."
