RE: Father of Charles Sherman ...

Page 1179: "Henry Sherman, was a native of Shippensburg, Franklin Co., Pa...was the eldest of six children, and early in life learned the trade of a blacksmith as well as that of toolmaker. In 1827 he journeyed overland to the young State of Ohio by means of teams, and settled among the pioneers of Richland County. He purchased land near the present site of Ontario, and six miles west of Mansfield, where he first cleared a spot large enough to erect a log cabin and establish a blacksmith-shop in the latter of which, by means of a charcoal furnace, he made himself remarkably useful to his neighbors for miles around. He was prospered in his labors of farming and blacksmithing combined, and cleared quite a large tract of land. The log cabin in time gave place to an imposing two-story log house, which was weather-boarded outside, and was the admiration of the country around.

The elder Sherman was injured while shoeing a refractory horse, and died Nov. 30, 1844, in his prime, when forty-two years of age."

It is therefore this descendant's conclusions:

1) Henry Sherman's birth and death dates ARE NOT on the Block 1/Lot 48, Reaver & Sherman PLOT for people buried at Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville, Marion County, Ohio. The individuals were related family members, but his information was not included.

2) The tombstone inscribed merely "Henry" at Graceland Cemetery is likely the burial location of the SON who died in the Civil War, 1861. Then his name may have been later added to the SHERMAN MEMORIAL HEADSTONE that is inscribed with the mother Mary (Nazor) Sherman and brother Jacob Sherman.

*** At this time the "Henry" headstone will remain on this memorial in remembrance of the father who died in Ohio, 1844. ***

3) The father, Henry Sherman, is probably buried in Richland County, Ohio which will be investigated for a LOCATION at a later date.

Ship MAYFLOWER LINEAGE TO: GEORGE SOULE, 1620

4) It is recently discovered, and believed that Henry Sherman has a direct lineal descent from the Mayflower passenger GEORGE SOULE, 1620. Proving it with official records is the next course of business.
