Matilda J. "Tillie" Alder, 95, of Pocatello, passed away peacefully at a local care center following an extended illness on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010.
Tillie was born to Mathilde and Englebert Beck on Aug. 17, 1915, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, the first of three children. She grew up in Coeur d'Alene, where she graduated from high school.
After high school she attended the Weiser Institute, and while there she met her husband, Lamont Alder. They were married March 21, 1941, and they had three children, Kathleen (Frank) Padovano of Falls Church, Va., John (Maribeth) Alder of Pocatello, and Arnold, who passed away in 1976. In 1947 they bought a farm on the Weiser Flat, where she lived until she was 91. Her husband, Lamont, died in 1989.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and George (Betty) Beck. She has three grandchildren, Douglas Alder, Daniel (Melissa) Alder, and Jolie Tarter.
Tillie was a gifted homemaker and helped her husband operate the farm. She was a 4-H leader in sewing, cooking, and gardening. She was an excellent cook and her home in Weiser was surrounded with beautiful flowers every summer.
Tillie's parents were from Germany, and in 1979 she and Lamont visited cousins and other relatives in Germany. Growing up near Lake Coeur d' Alene, Tillie developed a life long love of swimming. In addition to sewing and gardening she also enjoyed square dancing and bowling.
Tillie was active as a member of the Jonathan Club, the 20th Century Club, and the Weiser Flat Grange. After her husbands death she became active in St. Agnes Catholic Church, where she helped staff the thrift shop and did other volunteer work. In 2006, she moved to Cottonwood Cove apartments in Chubbuck in order to be closer to her family.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Cottonwood Cove, Quinn Meadows Rehabilitation, Highland Hills Assisted Living, and Creekside Hospice for the loving care they gave Tillie the last few years and days of her life. Tillie's smile and sweet personality will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends
