Dorothy Waide Starkey, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on July 28, 2009. She was 79 years old.


Dorothy was born July 18, 1930 in Sanger, Denton County, Texas to Margaret Marie Gibson Waide and Ray Edward Waide.


She spent her childhood years with her siblings Jimmy Ray Waide, Sonny Waide (deceased) as well as her half-brothers Gene Fowler, Richard Fowler, and her half-sister Margie Fowler.


She married Odell Starkey on April 6, 1951 in Carlsbad, New Mexico and they eventually settled in Bakersfield, California.


She and Odell eventually moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah after her retirement. Dorothy is remembered for her love of family and her personal accomplishments. She returned to college at age 40 and taught 2nd and 3rd grade at elementary schools in California for over 20 years. She enjoyed painting, crossword puzzles, reading, camping, dancing, and music. She also had a terrific sense of humor.


Dorothy is survived by her husband Odell Starkey, her four children, Gerald Lee Starkey (Susan), Catherine Lyn Plant (Ken), Donna Kaye Sorenson (Steve) and Danny Ray Starkey. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter-in-law Roxann Starkey.


Dorothy was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She and Odell joined the Church in 1975. She was later sealed to her husband Odell and her children in the Los Angeles Temple.


Her final moments were spent at her home in Pleasant Grove, Utah surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, and relatives.


A Funeral Service honoring Dorothy will be held on Friday, July 31, 2009 in the Battle Creek First Ward Chapel, 1250 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove, Utah, at 11:00 a.m. There will be a visitation held an hour prior to the services at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel.
Interment including a dedication of the gravesite will take place in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery immediately following the funeral.
