Louisa A. Gwin was born about 1832 to 1834, as she was listed as age 18 in the November 1850 census but as age 26 in the 1860 census. She died sometime after 1860, probably at Cahaba, Dallas County, Alabama. I've not found her or William in any other census documents.

A stone for her was placed at the New Cemetery, Cahaba, Dallas Co., AL, in the Gwin plot beside her mother, Jane (Walker) Gwin. That gravestone, which simply reads "In Memory of Louisa A. McKnight", is undated, so it may have been placed there at a much later time than her death, though it looks to be similar to others located there.

Louisa was allegedly married first to a Mr. Gaviness, and if so, it was probably in Cahaba, Dallas Co., AL. She was definitely married on Thursday, 17 May 1849, in Cahaba to a Cahaba printer, William J. McKnight. The wedding was a double ceremony with her oldest sister, Mary (Gwin) Roark, who married Abel Turner, conducted by Rev. James Cotten. The double wedding was probably held at the home of their parents, John and Jane (Walker) Gwin. It was clearly not at the church the family attended and that Cotten pastored, the Cahaba Methodist Episcopal Church, because Rev. Cotten's diary entry of that date states that he went from the wedding that night back to the church where he worked on his sermon.

William J. McKnight was born about 1829--the 1850 census lists him as a printer of age 21, owning property valued at seven hundred dollars, being a native of SC, and living at residence 599 with his wife, L.A., age 18. I believe him to be buried beside Louisa in the New Cemetery, Cahaba, Dallas Co., AL--Find A Grave Memorial# 19541437--because I saw a broken piece of a vandalized memorial stone bearing his name lying uprooted some fifty yards from Jane's and Louisa's graves inside the fenced Ulmer plot. It reads, in part, "WM. McKNIGH...".

In the aforementioned 1860 census of Cahaba, two young women are listed as living with her and William: Anna Turner, 10, who is the daughter of Abel and Mary (Gwin Roark) Turner; and an Elizabeth McKnight, 13, who could be a relative of William.
