As best we know, Chesley was the eighth and youngest child of John and Jane Gwin of Cahaba, capital of Alabama at the time. He was born about 1828 in Dallas County, but doesn't show up by name on the census records until 1850 in Cahaba, living with his parents and his new bride, Mary Frances E. "Fannie" (Bell) Gwin. From census documents, we've concluded that Chess and Fannie had at least seven children, four sons and three daughters: son W. J.; John I.; Mary Bell; Enoch; Frances Bell "Fannie" who married Albert Peter Leiser; Lula; and C. J., also a son. Much more information can be seen on our page for them at http://gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinChesleyR.htm.
