Ransom was the son of James Kendall and Catherine (Shuman) Kendall. He married Lydia Rex in Aug 26, 1838 in Monongalia Co.Va They were parents of 14 children.

Ransom and Lydia were pillars of their church at Chevauxdefrise. They gave the ground for the church and land for a cemetery and their little boy John was the first internment. John Alvin Kendall was probably born Aug 5, 1855.
