Arthur E. Schmatz, age 88, formerly of Manitowoc, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at Libby's House Assisted Living in Chilton.

Arthur was born on June 22, 1925 in Milwaukee, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Schiesl) Schmatz. He moved with his family to Manitowoc County as a child and graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on his 18th birthday rather than letting the Army draft him. Art served as an Aviation Machinists Mate, 2nd Class, aboard a sub-spotting aircraft, squadron VPB-73. After his discharge from military service, Art returned to Manitowoc where he met and married the former Marilyn Massman on September 11, 1954. Art and Marilyn owned and operated Quality Service Oil Company until time of his retirement.

Arthur was active in the American Legion Drews-Bleser Post #88 of Manitowoc, serving in many capacities including Commander for many years. During that time he was selected as Manitowoc County Veteran of the Year and as Legionnaire of the Year. He was also an active member of the 40 et 8. He also had the privilege of flying with Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in August 2010. Art was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Manitowoc.

Art is survived by his beloved wife: Marilyn, Chilton; his children: Mark Schmatz, Sturgeon Bay; Kelly Schmatz, Manitowoc; Karen (Terry) Wagner, Newton; Maria (Daniel) Viegut, Madison; six grandchildren: Jeremy Schmatz; Zachary Schmatz; McKenzy Wagner; Mallory Wagner; Madeline Viegut; Amelia Viegut; one brother and sister-in-law: Joseph (Lois) Schmatz, Cato; four sisters and two brothers-in-law: Betty Musial, Manitowoc; Frances (Harold) McDonnell, Manitowoc; Marion Dhein, Manitowoc; Anna (Milt) Hassemer, Whitelaw; one sister-in-law: Lorraine Massman, Manitowoc; one special niece: Annie Schwalbe, Manitowoc, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Mary Schmatz; one son: Michael Schmatz; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Paul and Catherine (Denor) Massman; four brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law: Melvin (Dorothy) Luckow; Norman Massman; James Dhein and Raymond Musial.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Calvary Mausoleum Chapel, 2601 South 14th Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Dave Pleier will officiate with burial of his cremated remains to follow in the Calvary Cemetery with full military graveside honors accorded by the American Legion Drews-Bleser Post #88 of Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may call at the chapel on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Old Glory Honor Flight or The American Legion Baseball Team. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.jensreinboldandpfeffer.com
