HIGHWAY CRASH NEAR KEWAUNEE KILLS WOMAN
Car Spins Across Road and Hits Tree Saturday Evening

Auto accidents cost the lives of three persons in Manitowoc and Kewaunee counties over the week-end.

Arthur Mertens, 60, of Two Rivers, and Mrs. Irene F. Spackman, 51, of Manitowoc, were instantly killed Saturday night when Mertens’ car spun across Memorial Drive and crashed broadside into a tree in front of the Kenneth Mosuch tourist camp just south of the Two Rivers city limits, county traffic police reported.

Mrs. Paul Mueller, 58, of Milwaukee, was instantly killed when she was pinned under her husbands car as it overturned in a ditch alongside Highway 24 about 5 1/2 Miles south of Kewaunee Sunday morning.

Manitowoc County Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said Mertens, and Mrs. Spackman died instantly of cerebral hemorrhages due to skull fractures. Mertens, who lives at Monroe St., was employed in the safety guard department of the machine shop of Plant No. 1 of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Co. Plant at Two Rivers.

Mrs. Spackman, who resided at Washington St., was a buyer for the Schuette Bros. Co. They are Manitowoc County’s second and third auto accident fatalities of 1956.

The accident occurred at 7:10 p.m. on pavement which was covered with ice, slush and snow. Mertens was driving northeast towards Two Rivers. He passed a car driven by Richard Glaeser of Meadow Lane. Riding with Glaeser were Harold Daugs of S. 30th St. And Thomas Heyduk of S. 14th St. all of Manitowoc.

Wraps Around Tree
They told Officers James Benishek and Jack Jackson that Mertens was traveling about 50 miles per hour when he passed their car. As he was trying to pull back into the right hand lane he apparently lost control of the car. The other motorists saw it slide to the left of the road, spinning around at least once before it slammed into the tree and wrapped itself around the trunk.

Mrs. Spackman was hurled out of the car. The coroner said she suffered a fractured jaw in addition to the fatal head injury. Mertens was found inside the car. His right arm was fractured and his chest was crushed, the coroner said.

Kenneth Mosuch reported the accident to Two Rivers police and they alerted county traffic officers. A Two Rivers physician pronounced the victim's dead at the accident scene. Mertens’ 1950 model car was demolished.
