Mary Vance Paton, 80, died May 28, 2005, in a local care facility. Mary died as she lived, with elegance and dignity. She will be remembered for her accomplishments; a successful loving marriage to Jim Paton; the instilling of morals and values into her six children; her great beauty in her youth; and her elegance and charm as she aged. Born Jan. 29, 1925, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Harkins and Ellen Grant Harkins. She was also preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Laurence R. Vance. Mrs. Paton retired from Norfolk City schools and was a member of the Church of the Incarnation. She is survived by her husband, James Paton of Charlottesville; three daughters, MaryEllen Ballard of Hong Kong, Sally Anne Curtis of Lynchburg and Sharon R. Gialluca of Charlottesville; three sons, Robert Vance of Zuni, Va., William Vance of Glen Allen, Va., and Lawrence Vance of Buckingham, Va.; two brothers, Joseph Harkins of Wellsley, Mass., and John Harkins of Hicksville, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. George Catholic Church in Scottsville, with Father Ralph Hamlet officiating. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the interment. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is assisting the family.
