Chico Record, Wednesday Morning, May 17, 1911, pg 4 col 5: Death Came While Aged Woman Slept. Mrs. E.M. Stebbins Passed Away Monday Evening at Son’s Home. When A.O. Stebbins went to the room occupied by his mother, Mrs. E.M. Stebbins, 1343 Third street, shortly after 7 o’clock yesterday morning, he found the aged lady dead. He called to her the usual good morning and when she did not answer he called his wife, who found that Mrs. Stebbins was dead. Death was entirely unexpected, as Mrs. Stebbins retired Monday night at 9 o’clock as usual and was apparently in good health. She died while asleep, as her eyes were closed in peaceful slumber and the position of her body showed that she had passed away quietly.
She was a native of Augusta, New York, and aged eighty-five years. Fourteen years ago she came to California and directly to Chico, where she made her home continuously with her son, who was devoted to her. She was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church and was a lovable and splendid woman, with a large and sympathetic heart. Many friends in this city and in her former home will receive the news of her death with genuine sorrow.
The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the late residence. Rev. C.E. Winning will officiate and interment will take place in the Chico cemetery.
Mrs. Stebbins leaves her son, A.O. Stebbins of Chico, and a daughter, Mrs. Ada G. Cogan of North Dakota; also a sister, Mrs. Luperta Ensign of Oakland.
