"Dr. E. L. Grant, of Petersburg, Ky., died at his home, July 8, aged 85 years. He has left behind a record attained by few men. He was a genial, upright, cultivated gentleman, who could always be relied upon to lend his influence and means in support of every measure that had for its object the promotion of the public good. He won the love and esteem of every one who knew him. He believed in the brotherhood of man, and was a devout member of the Swedenborgian Church.
Dr. Grant was born on the Licking river, where the town of Visalia now stands, December 11, 1816. Col. John Grant, his grandfather, was a brother-in-law of Daniel Boone, having married his sister, Elizabeth Boone, in North Carolina. Col. Grant, with a company of militia and the families of a number of his neighbors, came to Kentucky and built a blockhouse and fort known as Grant's Station, about midway between Bryan Station and Versailles. Col. Grant was well known as a military man, and nobly earned the fame which links his name with the history of Kentucky.
Dr. E. L. Grant was educated at Augusta College, and graduated in medicine from the University of Louisville in 1842, where he was a private student of the renowned Prof, S. D.Gross. In that year he married Miss J. R. Prest, of Louisville, and opened an office at First and Jefferson streets. He soon returned to Boone county, where he has lived for the past sixty years. Nearly twenty years ago he lost his first wife, and five years later was married a second time, to his neighbor, Mrs, E. A. Allen, who survives him. Four of their children are living. The oldest is the Hon. J. Frank Grant, Grand Secretary of the Sovereign Grand Lodge, I.O.O.F., of Baltimore, Md.
Two sons, Dr. H. Horace Grant, one of the editors of this Journal, and Dr. W. Ed Grant, located in Louisville, survive him. One other son, Mr. Ernest L. Grant, lives upon the family homestead in Boone county."
