Leona Gaede, 96, of Sumner, died Saturday, June1, 2013, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, Iowa with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday.

Leona, daughter of Louis and Emma Kuhlmann Bruns, was born October 26, 1916, in Maxfield Township of rural Bremer County, Iowa. She attended rural school in the Maxfield area and was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church-Maxfield. On October 11, 1938, she was united in marriage with Edwin Gaede at St. John Lutheran Church-Maxfield by Rev. Baerman.

Leona was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner where she participated in WELCA. She loved music, dancing, sewing, and doing yard work. She volunteered helping with crafts at Hillcrest for twenty-seven years and occasionally played the organ for the residents through their supper hour. She also occasionally played organ and piano duets with her daughter, Marge at Hillcrest. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Leona is survived by a son, Russell (Avis) Gaede of Waterloo; two daughters, Marjorie (Eugene) Knoploh of Sumner and Rebecca (Duane) Bullerman of Denver, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Karen Gaede of Denver; nine grandchildren, Darin (Angie) Gaede, David (Holly) Gaede, Kellie (Bret) Voss, Brian (Lisa) Bullerman, Sheryl (Peter) Johnson, Sheila Knoploh-Odole, Krista (Jon) Lindholm, Julia (Curt) Winterboer, and Angela (Andrew) Carr ; twenty-one great grandchildren; two step grandchildren, Marcey Bullerman and Jacquelyn (Myron) Hill; and one step great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; one son, Warren; two brothers, Ernest and Elmer; and one sister, Anna.
