Add PhotosVariations of this name including Johns Cemetery, Jones Chapel Cemetery, and Jones Chapel burying Ground were used to record deaths in the Civil Death Records of the District for at least 1874-1895.
Like the adjacent Paynes Cemetery, Jones Chapel Cemetery is a historical cemetery, no longer accepting burials, many of which were likely moved when Payne's Cemetery was relocated in the 1960s.
Jones Chapel itself is associated with Noah Jones, who was an early minister at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in DC, according to a history of published in 1897 when a new building for the Ebenezer Church was being finished.
The Evening Star Newspaper noted in 1883 (8 Feb p. 3) that the Jones Chapel Burying Ground was contiguous with Payne's Burial Ground (in Find-A-Grave as Paynes Cemetery), and that they were often separated by a fence. Legally, the court involved considered the two cemeteries separate, according to the Evening Star article "Undertaker's Mistake"; the mistake was a burial in Jones Chapel when it was registered for Paynes.
In property maps from after 1900, the Jones Chapel property was only a fraction (abt 0.15) of an acre. The burials were likely south of the chapel on the adjacent part of what shows on maps as Paynes cemetery.
The cemetery is being created in Find-A-Grave to preserve the integrity of matching District of Columbia Death and Burial Records, which the DC Court considered important, at least in 1883.
