Race Car Driver. He was primarily a driver in American open-wheel car racing, also known as Indy Car racing. He almost won the Indianapolis 500 in 1975, but the race was stopped due to weather and never restarted, making Bobby Unser the winner. He was also a CART official from 1960 until 2004. After leaving CART, he remained involved in motorsports; he purchased a ranch, fairground, cabins, and a private automotive restoration garage with his winnings from the California 500. His first race was in 1962, and his last was in 1974. During this time, he never finished first. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame of New Jersey (2004), Motorcycle Hall of Fame (2006), Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2020), Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame (2021), Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame (2022) and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Museum Hall of Fame (2022). He was the father of NASCAR driver and commentator Wally Dallenbach Jr. He passed away at the age of 87.
