Bartley Tree Cemetery

The Bartley Tree Cemetery records the memorials of each Bartley Family member descended from Thomas Bartley Sr. through his son, John Bartley. Thomas was b. April 4, 1759, in the Charing Cross section of London, England, d. Sept. 16, 1854, Edgefield County, SC. Thomas immigrated in 1773 at the age of 13 and was indentured to a Mr. Elisha Tyson of Baltimore, MD, living in Harford County. He was a Revolutionary War veteran. At the end of his indentured servitude, Thomas joined the 1st Maryland Regiment of the Maryland Continental Line in 1778. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Fishing Creek, South Carolina, on Aug. 18, 1780. After his release/exchange in the spring of 1781, he rejoined the Maryland Continentals and was assigned to the 3rd Regiment. He was in the Battle of Yorktown, and continued fighting until the end of the war. He was discharged in 1783 at Annapolis, MD. Thomas applied for and was awarded his Rev War pension in 1832. According to his application after his discharge he spent about two years in Virginia thereafter moving first to Lancaster Co., SC then to Edgefield District, SC where he lived to be 95 years old. He was a devoted member of Red Bank Baptist Church and, according his Edgefield Advertiser (newspaper) obituary, had scholarly knowledge of the bible. He was buried in Saluda Co. SC in the Bartley Family Cemetery. He and Patience had three son's, Thomas Jr., John (my ancestor), and another son whose name is unknown and is thought to have died in childhood.
