Dairy Scientist, Bacteriologist, Writer, Photographer, Historian. Lore Rogers was the second of seven children raised by his lumberman-father and his wife in a small northern Maine town. He enrolled at the University of Maine, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture in 1896. This was followed by graduate study at the University of Wisconsin and several years as a researcher at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York. He joined the United States Department of Agriculture in 1902, where he served as chief of their Dairy Products Laboratory for 36 years. He was best known for groundbreaking research in butter spoilage, cheese production, and pioneering work on freeze-drying of cultures. He was a theoretical scientist whose work advanced the dairy industry and was used by the military in World War I. He represented the United States at International Dairy Congresses in Stockholm (1911), London (1928) and Rome (1934). Dr. Rogers was the author or co­author of nearly 100 scientific papers. He was awarded honorary Doctor of Science degrees from University of Maryland (1923) and University of Maine (1925) and was elected to membership in the Society of American Bacteriologists, American Society for Microbiology, Dairy Science Association, Cosmos Club, Sigma Xi, Washington Academy of Sciences, and Washington Academy of Medicine. He was the first recipient of the Borden Award in Dairy Manufacturing (1937) and received the Distinguished Service Award from American Dairy Science Association (1963). Proud of his hometown and heritage, he was the co-founder and curator of the Lumberman's Museum in Patten, Maine, and recipient of Maine Commission on the Arts and Humanities Achievement Award (1968) and legislative citation from the Maine House of Representatives and Senate (1973).
