Richard N. Gerry, 82, Buckland astronomer
Richard Nye Gerry, 82, of 35 Upper St., an area astronomer, died Tuesday at home.
He worked at the former Hoyt's Home Appliance Store in Shelburne Falls for nine years, after which he was a research engineer at the former Greenfield Tap & Die Co. He retired in 1979.
Born here, he was a lifelong resident and a graduate of the former Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls. He was a World War II Army Air Forces veteran and a member of Mary Lyon Church.
He belonged to the Springfield Stars Club and other astronomical clubs. He built an observatory at his home, won several awards for telescope design and optics and wrote a column on astronomy for the West County News in Shelburne Falls.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, a son, a daughter, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be this morning at the church, with burial in Center Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home of Shelburne Falls and Greenfield is in charge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Western New England, 48 Sanderson St., Greenfield, MA 01301, or the American Cancer Society, in care of Greenfield Cooperative Bank, 63 Federal St., Greenfield MA 01301.
