Death of A. S. Lowther.

Alexander S. Lowther, son of Archibald and Charlotte Lowther, was born in Harrison county, West Virginia, June 1, 1842, and died in Peabody, Kansas, June 4, 1917, being at that time 75 years and 3 days old. He was one of seven children, three of whom, two brothers and a sister, are still living.

Early in the war he enlisted in Co. E 6th W. Va. Volunteer Infantry, but in a short time he was transferred to a battery of heavy artillery where he served until the close of the war.

He married Mary A. Nutter, Nov. 2, 1865 at Holbrook, W. Va., and to them were born eleven children, eight sons and three daughters; of these, seven sons and one daughter are still living.

The family moved to Kansas in the spring of 1871 and a few miles northeast of Peabody took up a homestead which has remained with the title unchanged from that time until the present. In December, 1906, the family moved to Peabody.

Mr. Lowther was converted in January, 1866, very soon after his marriage. He at once united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and remained a faithful member to the time of his death.

One of our pioneer settlers, Mr. Lowther had a wide circle of friends and he will be greatly missed by the many who knew him as a true man, a real friend and a sincere Christian gentleman.

Funeral services were at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Charles D. Whitwam, and the body was laid to rest in the family lot in Prairie Lawn cemetery.
