**John "Jack" J. Mahoney
Not known when he came to the United States where he was a laborer.
He enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 24 September 1875. At the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was in Co. C, commanded by Thomas Custer. Each company had a few of their troopers back to help with the pack train, John Mahoney was one of these. This duty saved his life. He did fight the remainder of the battle on Reno Hill when the pack train got up.
There is a good chance that he had a brother that also served in the 7th Cav, named Daniel Mahoney, who was born in Cork County, Ireland. They enlisted within 3 days of each other. If not a brother Daniel was definitely a relative and they probably came to the U.S. together
