CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES
J. E. Austin, 85, Was In Several Outstanding Battles
Shelburne Falls, Oct. 19 - John Edward Austin, 85, died at his home on Main street yesterday morning after an illness of several months. He was a native of Manchester, Ct., but spent the greater part of his life at Shelburne Falls, where he conducted a machine repair shop on River street until a few years ago when he retired from active business. He was a Civil war veteran, having served with Co H, 10th Massachusetts regiment, from 1861 to 1865. He was wounded in the battles of Fair Oaks and the Wilderness.
He was a member of Ozro Miller post, G.A.R. and served as an officer for several years. He was married in 1855 [sic] to Miss Charlotte Goodnow of Colrain. She died several years ago. Since that time he has made his home with his daughter, Miss Maude Austin. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 at the home and will be in charge of H. G. Greenleaf post Sons of Veterans. Rev. F. C. Jones of the Baptist church and Rev. James Sergeant of the Congregational church will officiate. Burial will be in Arms.
