Thomas Gillespie enlisted with Company A, 35th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry on Aug. 15, 1861. In July of 1862 he was promoted to Corporal. He mustered out on Aug. 26, 1864 and re-enlisted two months later then with Company K, 42nd Regiment of the Illinois Infantry. In June of 1865 Thomas took a gun shot to his left arm which shattered his humerus and left him permanently disabled. He spent the remainder of his life in and out of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He was laid to rest in Mount Pleasant Cemetery and his brother Josiah would later be laid along side of him. Their brother Arthur is also in Mount Pleasant.
