Michigan Governor, U.S. Senator. Moving to Detroit, Michigan, he established a successful shoe wholesale business in 1838. Entering politics, he was a member of the convention which organized the Republican Party, a member of the Michigan State Senate, (1861-62) and president of the Second National Bank of Detroit. He was elected as a Republican the 15th Governor of Michigan, serving (1869-73). While he was in office, a state public school for dependent children was established, construction for a new state capitol was authorized and a series of improvements were slated for the state's penal, reformatory and charitable institutions. In 1879, he was elected as a as a Republican Senator from Michigan to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Zachariah Chandler, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for reelection, he was president of the Detroit National Bank, (1883-87).
