PFC Sidney Herbert Blan Jr. served with the 106th Infantry Division. On December 16, the 106th was reassigned to the Ardennes-Alsace Campaign and were immediately attacked by German forces. The division's 422nd and 423rd Infantry Regiments were almost immediately cut off and encircled by enemy forces in the vicinity of Schonberg. The two regiments surrendered on December 19, after they had completely run out of ammunition. On March 31, 1945, PFC Blan was killed when the POW camp in which he was housed, originally a German hospital at Brandenberg, was bombed, probably by Allied forces who were unaware that Americans were held there as POWs.
