Leona Frances (Haley) Thompson was born on Monday; May 25, 1914 in Adams County, Iowa. She was the daughter of: Simon and Annie (Ensign) Haley. Leona was raised in Adams County and graduated from the Villisca, Iowa High School in 1932. Leona was the only child in her family who worked her way through high school in order to be able to graduate. Leona was united in marriage to Clarence Thompson on June 17, 1933 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. They lived in Pilot Grove Township before moving to Elliott in 1958. Leona worked at the Elliott Café before starting to work as a cook at the Elliott School. She retired in 1979 after 19 years of service. Leona had resided at the Griswold Care Center for the past two years. Over the years she was a member of several neighborhood clubs including the PDQ Club. Leona enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, canning, caring for her flowers, and reading. And she never forgot to send birthday cards.

Leona Frances (Haley) Thompson, age 96, passed away on Saturday; June 19, 2010 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold; Cass County, Iowa. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her children: Dick Thompson of Red Oak, Iowa; Peggy (Max) Van Buskirk of Red Oak, Iowa and Betty (Wes) McConnell of Canton, South Dakota., Her nine grandchildren: Debbie Rannals of Richmond, Virginia; Cindy (Jerry) Dittmer of Muscatine, Iowa; Stanley (Nancy) Thompson of Des Moines, Iowa; Lori (Mark) Van Horn of St. Louis, Missouri; Jim Van Buskirk of Red Oak, Iowa; Sherry (Drue) Powers of Red Oak, Iowa; Mark (Sharon) McConnell of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Rex (Gretchen) Van Buskirk of Overland Park, Kansas and Marla (Terry) Woessner of Tea, South Dakota. Her twenty-six great grandchildren. Her sister-in-law: Marie Barr of Stanton, Iowa. Also many other relatives and a host of friends. Preceding Leona in death are her parents; her husband: Clarence on July 9, 1991; her brothers: Frank, Floyd, Paul, Cliff, Chester, Bill, Bob, and Tom. Also her sisters: Mary, Gladys, Nellie, and Ruby. May they rest in peace. May God bless her memory and give strength to those that mourn.
