Charles left Brimfield about 1820 and moved to Hartford, CT, staying about 3 years. He then moved to New York City where he lived until 1845, and then moved to Maryland where he lived 5 years before returning to Brooklyn, NY for another 5 years. In 1855 he moved to Rockford, IL and in 1859 he was elected Mayor of that city and went on to serve a total of 5 terms. During his time as mayor, he lost one son to the Civil War.
