"On March 31, 1943, Robert was drafted and inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He received his initial training in Greensboro, North Carolina and West Palm Beach, Florida. After transferring to the Infantry, he was stationed at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi with the 225th Infantry Regiment.

On September 9, 1944, Private Shaw drowned in the Mississippi River while returning on a ferry from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi. His body was recovered from the river and sent home for burial about two weeks later." Excerpt from Fold3.
