Final Statement of Alvin A. Caldwell a Sergeant of Captain Thomas M. K. Smith's Company "D" of the 23rd Regiment of Infantry, born in Clearfield in the state of Pennsylvania aged (at enlistment) 27 years, 5 feet 7 inches high, Fair complexion, Grey eyes, Black hair, and by occupation a Painter, was enlisted by Captain Smith at Fort Lewis, Ks. on the 26th day of July, eighteen hundred and Seventy Eight to serve for Five years, who died at the Post Hospital Cantonment on Uncompahgre, Colorado on the 10th day of September 1881 by reason of strangulation of the intestines and twisting of the small intestine.
