Tom Garrett Stephenson, resident of Ponca City, Okla., passed away on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at St. Anthony Hospital. He was 57.

The service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church Chapel with The Reverend Jack Shamburger officiating. Burial will follow at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City, Kan. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory of Ponca City, Okla.

Tom was born on Sept. 12, 1952 to Walter James and Jewel Etha Rich Stephenson in Spur, Texas. He was raised in the Lubbock area, graduating from Roosevelt High School in Acuff, Texas before attending Texas Tech. He married Terri Ann Jones on June 29, 1991 at the First Baptist Church in Ponca City.

He started working in the grocery business at the age of 16 for Piggly Wiggly. A few years later, he went to work for Safeway, transferring to Ponca City in 1983. While working for Safeway, he transferred to the Arkansas City store before moving back to Ponca City. When Safeway was purchased by Homeland, he continued in management until its closure. He later managed Buy For Less/ Ponca City Discount Foods and had recently accepted the position as manager for Heartland Foods in Newkirk, Okla. He enjoyed camping, computers, reading Popular Science magazine and playing darts.

He is survived by his wife, Terri Stephenson; his special dog, Dexter; one sister, Carolyn of Lubbock; brothers, Jenk and wife Patty of Newhall, Calif., Henry and wife Kelly of Amery, Wis. and David and wife Johnnie of Allen, Texas; mother-in-law, Sheryl Martin of Ponca City; brothers-in-law, Craig Litton of Longview, Texas and Jason Jones and wife Amy of Edmond, Okla.; sister-in-law, Christine Martin of Edmond, Okla.; nephews, Jason Litton, Marc Stephenson, Gary Stephenson, Chris Stephenson, Maxwell Stephenson and Garrett Phillip Jones, who is due in December; nieces, Brenna Stephenson, Julie Williamson, Beth Stephenson, Tessa Stephenson and Carly Stephenson; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter James and Jewel Etha; sister, Linda Litton; and father-in-law, Doug Martin.

Casketbearers will be Maxwell and Carly Stephenson, Jason Jones, Kenny Orr, Randy Neal, Donnie Klinger and Kanten Klinger. Honorary casketbearers are the members of his dart team, Troy Warrior, Sheila Deavers, Rhonda Williamson, Tom Myers and Jamie Thomas.
