Maria Luisa Rivera passed away at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 23, 2009.
"Dona Marie", as known by her family and friends, will be lovingly remembered by her children, Luis and his wife, Evelyn, Ines and her husband, Gary, and Adrian and his wife, Ruthy. She was predeceased by her husband, Luis Rivera in 2008 and their youngest son, Albert Rivera in 1987.
"Dona Marie" will also be fondly remembered by her seven grandchildren, and her five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a special close dear friend Julia Perez and other relatives and friends.
She was born June 05, 1918, in Ponce, Puerto Rico and was the daughter of the late Juan and Angela Rivera. She lived in Charlottesville, Virginia for the past six years, moving here from New York City.
She met her late husband of 52 years, Luis Rivera, in New York City. In 1956, they were married at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in New York City. They had four children together.
She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her fear of God and his teachings provided a stable and steady influence throughout the years. "In times of hardships, read your Bible and put it all in God's hands. All your problems will perish," she used to tell her children, and it is true. Although she was so tiny and frail, she gave her family, such courage and hope and reminded them of the preciousness of life. No matter her age of 91, she watched her middle-aged children for signs of improvement and continued to share her wisdom. Her families hearts broke the day she no longer was with them. Although she is now in the Heavenly Home, their lives will not be the same again without her.
Funeral Mass was held Thursday, August 27, 2009 at St's. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 4309 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Palmyra, Virginia, with Father N. Alan Lipcomb presiding. Burial followed at St. George's Catholic Cemetery, Rt. 20, Scottsville, Virginia.
