James Harley Yates - obituary
James Harley Yates was born November 16, 1903, the son of James and Almedia Yates, at Rushville, Illinois. He came with his parents in January, 1918 to settle on a farm east of Guthrie. He received his education in a country school known as the Irvin School.
He was married to Velma Ruth Ferrell on November 16, 1929. To this union were born two children, Velma Jean and James Harley Jr. The family lived on a farm east of Guthrie until 1945 when they moved to Guthrie.
He became service manager of the Goodyear Service store and served that company for twenty one years. He became a member of the West Guthrie United Methodist Church in 1946. He was an active member of the church and served as a member of the official board, the board of trustees, and as president of the W.O.M. Sunday school class.
He departed this life, Friday, April 3, 1970 at the age of 66 years, 4 months, and 18 days.
He is mourned by his wife, Ruth of the home; one daughter, Mrs. John Scannell of Guthrie; one son of Lawton; one brother, Fred of Guthrie; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Willson of Crescent, Mrs. Maynard Bechtel of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. Edgar Kendall and Mrs. A. E. Privette of Guthrie; and two grandsons and one granddaughter; and a host of friends.
He was a loving, kind husband and father and he gained the respect and friendship of the people of Guthrie and Logan county by his honesty and friendly manner.
His death will leave a vacancy in the Hearts of his loved ones and friends.
