Biography:
HARE, SILAS, JR. (1862–1931). Silas Hare, Jr., lawyer, banker, and judge, third son of Octavia Elizabeth (Rector) and Silas Hareqv, was born on October 30, 1862, in Belton, Texas. The family moved to Sherman in 1865, and Silas spent his entire life there except for his attendance at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Texas A&M University), where he was a member of the first graduating class in 1882. Although his degree was in civil engineering, he studied law with his father and began practice with him after admission to the bar in 1883. Hare was captain of the Grayson Rifles of Sherman and served on the school board for a number of years. He was city attorney at one time and county attorney from 1896 to 1900. He was vice president of the Merchants and Planters National Bank, which his father helped found. He was appointed judge of the Fifteenth District Court and remained on the bench for ten years, until his retirement in 1929. During that time, only one or two of Hare's cases were reversed by the higher court. On February 22, 1890, he married Kate Glasscock, daughter of a doctor; they had one son. Hare was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and president of the Grayson County Bar Association when he died on March 10, 1931.
