Monroe Compton was the second child born to Norris Compton and his third wife, Elizabeth Watson Compton. He married Elizabeth Johnson Flack in Greenville Co, SC. They left Greenville, SC, with a wagon train in 1852 and settled in the Apple Grove area of Morgan County. Then they moved northeast of Apple Grove and homesteaded 160 acres of land on the point of Brindley Mountain.

During the War Between the States, Monroe was detailed to the Nitre and Mining Bureau #8 and #9, under William Gabbot. He was assigned to the Hughes Cave near his home, to make saltpeter. He was discharged in April 1865.

Monroe and Elizabeth were the parents of eleven children, three that died young.

He was my maternal great-grandfather.
