Pioneer of Centralia Dies
J.J. Carey a resident of Centralia for 41 years. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. M.D. Briggs (Thelma) of Centralia, and a son, Charles Carey of Malone.
Mr. Carey, a veteran of the Indian Wars, was a member of Troop B, 7th United States Cavalry, When that unit was proceeding under command of Maj. Reno to the aid of Gen. Custer at the time of Custer Massacre. After coming to Centralia in 1888 Mr. Carey served as assistant chef of the first volunteer fire department organized here.
The deceased had been an Eagle for 26 years, having been a charter member of Centralia aerie, No. 512.
Cora Eleanor Conley Was J.J. 2nd. wife and their children were Thelma and Charles.

The 7th Calvary is mentioned in his obit. He was under the command of Major Reno at the Battle at Little Big Horn. He's main duty was driving the supply wagon (or pack train). He must have done a better job for Major Reno than General Custer's pack train driver. Major Reno and most of his men lived.
