Artist, she is best remembered as the creator of Rupert Bear. Born Mary Caldwell into an artistic family and growing up studying art she ended up marrying the editor of The Daily Express newspaper Herbert Tourtel. Rupert the Bear was created in the 1920s as competition with The Daily Mail newspaper and their character Teddy Tail created by Charles Folkard. She retired in 1934 after beginning to go blind.
