Silas was born and raised in New Hampshire. In 1857 he moved to Illinois, where he was a farmer and a teacher. In 1862 he drove a horse team over the Oregon Trail. He settled in Benton County and worked for ten years as a public school teacher and was also a successful farmer. In 1865 he married Precious Starr Caton, a widow with four children. In later life he stopped farming and "handled" real estate and loans. He was a very active member of Odd Fellows, Rebekah, and the local grange and was a Republican.
